Money-saving tips for all-inclusive vacations

  1. Stay at the resort. Excursions are great, but they cost extra. Plus, when you leave the resort for a day, you’re likely paying for food and drinks on your excursion that you’ve already paid for at the resort! If you still want to leave, book excursions around meal times and pack drinks or snacks from the hotel, if possible.
  2. Travel off-season. School breaks, holidays, and summers are the busiest times for vacations.
  3. Compare prices among vacation companies, airlines, and hotels. Sometimes the package rate is more expensive than booking flight, airport transfer, and hotel separately. We got a great deal at the Nickelodeon Hotel and Resort Punta Cana by booking directly with the hotel.
  4. Sign up for emails from vacation companies. Companies will send discount codes or last-minute vacation deals to subscribers or social media followers. These deals can include everything from free spa treatments to a discount code on the whole vacation.
  5. Choose the location, but be flexible with the actual resort. For example, Apple Vacations offers a “square deal” for guests to select a specific level or hotel rating, and Apple Vacations selects the hotel for the travelers. These vacations are often significantly less expensive than selecting a specific resort for the same dates.
  6. Fly from a different airport. Airline hubs and those airports with vacation company chartered flights can save time and money, even when considering gas or hotel room the night before the flight. We often flew out of Chicago when we lived in Milwaukee because the airline or vacation company offered a direct flight.
  7. Travel hack part or all of the vacation. Vacation companies can book flight, airport transfer, and hotel as a package, but this package is not the only option. I booked flights to Punta Cana using Delta Skymiles to save money, and then booked hotel and airport transfer directly with the hotel. We saved $850 per person ($2550 total!) by using our miles. Plus, more hotel brands have joined the all-inclusive vacation market, including Marriott and Hyatt, which means more options to save money on all-inclusive vacations!
